The Social Media Mistakes Your Business Should Avoid

Published by SimplyCast

If your business is new to using social media, you could be falling into one of these common traps that will limit your overall success.

From believing that social media is the “golden ticket" to all markets, to producing poor quality content. By making a few simple changes to your online presence it will help build your brand and grow your customer base.

Social Media Mistakes Your Business Should Avoid:

Mistake 1: Ignoring Other Forms of Marketing

Social media enhances tried-and-true or traditional marketing methods, and should not replace your current marketing strategy. Avoid the misconception that social media is the only way into untapped markets; it is a way to reach different markets, not all of them.

Not everyone has an online presence.

Instead, incorporate social media into your overall marketing strategy.

Mistake 2: No Management or Oversight

Assigning a staff member or an entire team of social media gurus inside your business will help you remain consistent, and prevent any online snafus. Letting any odd staffer have access to your social media accounts may lead to improper posting or even worse, mixed messages.

Having a point person or a team lead your company's online presence also requires extensive planning, coordination and oversight critical to social media success.

Mistake 3: Not Producing Fresh, Relevant Content

Engaging prose is both invigorating and captivating, while stale content will assuredly turn off customers and almost guarantee them to stop paying attention to what you’re saying.

Vary your content to include customer testimonials, reviews, industry tidbits, company news and employee profiles. If you only focus on what your business has to offer rather than starting a conversation with your potential customer, then you’ve already turned them off.

Poorly written content is a burgeoning problem for search engines. Ensure that whatever you post is clear, concise and correct.

Mistake 4: Disregarding Testing and Data

Possibly one of the worst mistakes is not testing the effectiveness or impact of your social media presence. Virtually all social media platforms have built-in data collection tools, and by not utilizing that information, you will never know if what you’re doing is right.

Further, testing your strategy not only provides you with valuable information, it can allow your business to grow and adapt to meet the needs of your customers.

First, analyze the data collected from your social media sites to figure out your baseline. Then, check the data often looking for places to change, and if you do make a change, monitor that data as well.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Demographics

Who is the average user, say on Twitter? 18-32? Female?

Demographics are widely available for almost all social media sites, and understanding who the average user is can help you not only tailor your message to them, but figure out if a certain site fits your company's needs.

Just like any other marketing strategy, identifying who you are trying to reach is the first step. Then, determine where and how this targeted audience receives their information.

Mistake 6: Forgetting Proper Grammar and Punctuation

A rather large misconception is that with social media, you can naturally be informal. Designed to communicate and relate, the casualness of social media never means that you should be lax on your grammar and punctuation.

Would you ever design a direct mail marketing piece that includes gross spelling errors, “text-jargon” (like “UR” for “your” or “you’re”) or incorrect punctuation? Didn’t think so.

Considering social media informal is a good thing, however treating it unprofessionally is not, and will ultimately backfire.
