Double optin and closed-loop authentication

Double optin and closed-loop authentication

Application and Account Settings FAQs

The difference between double optin and closed-loop authentication confirmation involves how your recipient confirms they would like to be added to your list. When someone signs up to receive your email communications, best practice dictates that you should have two-step verification. Two of these options are double optin and closed-loop authentication.

If you choose to use a double optin process, your recipient must click on a link in a confirmation email they receive to confirm their subscription. With closed-loop authentication, the recipient must respond to the confirmation email instead of clicking on a link within it.

Double optin tends to be an easier method of confirmation for a couple of reasons:

  • The recipient doesn't need to formulate a message.
  • You as the user/sender do not need to monitor your inbox for confirmation messages
  • Contact confirmations are automatically stored and sorted.

The reason some form of confirmation is required is to prevent someone from adding somebody else's email address without their permission. When someone confirms their subscription, they are confirming that they did sign up and want to receive your campaigns. The option you choose for your confirmation depends on how you plan to organize your process. Some software, such as the one SimplyCast provides, offers a built-in double optin process you can use in order to ensure contacts are properly added to your lists without any labor on your part.
