About This Position

The Youth Programmer is responsible for writing, testing, and debugging code to fix software defects, improve performance, and add new features to applications.

Applicants must meet all the following requirements:

  • Identify as a woman pursuing or working toward a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics)
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Be a post-secondary graduate, having completed a degree or diploma program at a university, college, post-secondary school of technology, post-secondary institute, or CEGEP
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status
  • Be a first-time participant in a Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) work experience program targeted at post-secondary graduates

Key Responsibilities

  1. Analyze code to find and resolve software errors, performance bottlenecks, and other defects.
  2. Modify existing software or create new code to adapt to new hardware, improve performance, or add functionality.
  3. Work closely with software testers, product managers, and other developers to ensure quality code and efficient issue resolution.
  4. Develop and perform unit tests and validation procedures to ensure the software is functional and stable.
  5. Create and maintain technical documentation and reports on development activities and project status.
  6. Ensure the software is up-to-date, secure, and meets the latest company and legislative standards.
  7. Provide technical assistance to users and conduct analysis to recommend system improvements.

Job Requirements

  1. Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C#).
  2. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to debug complex issues effectively.
  3. Crucial for accurately identifying and correcting code defects.
  4. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment.
  5. A solid understanding of the software development life cycle and development best practices.
  6. Clear communication skills for reporting on project status and collaborating with team members.
